A lot of thought and staring went into this new series of paintings, and with the help of Brazil, the cat, i have found the appropriate title for them: Thickening. Yes, it sounds a bit odd and awkward, but that's just what the creatures, emerged on my canvases, are. Hold on 'till you can see them online, or, even better, in real life!

Artevent Ahoy, Rotterdam has had an impact... A new series of landscapes/skyscapes has emerged under the name Being Steel #E. Thunderclouds!

The text to the 'Thunderclouds'-exhibition (2007):

“Bosun!”, begins Peter Greenaway’s movie ’Prospero’s Books’. “Bosun!” With it, Prospero brings to life a storm as well as a ship, trapped in it. The old-fashioned bosun, responsible for the ship now needs to find a way to bring the passengers and crew safely to land.

Maarten Wydooghe paints the storm. In studying painting at St.-Lucas Brussels (Fik van Gestel) and St.-Lucas Ghent (Piet Moerman) a fascination grew for movement (resulting in video-expositions at Watou, Belgium) and short movies (Head On a Plate pictures) and the impact of a storm. Solidifying these in time and matter resulted in a series of thorough studies of paintings in oil (in itself a moving and changing medium) on canvas.

Despite the fact painting has been looked upon as old-fashiond, gallery Hartistic, in 2007, shows oil on canvas. The way the term bosun continues to reinvent itself on ever changing ships, oil on canvas survives changing times. The canvases which describe the air announce a world coming into being. A changing, organic world in-between that, because of the stucture (layer upon layer), posesses an underlying vitality. The paintings were selected for contests before (Gaverprijs, Stimulans) and won the people's award at Kiezen Voor Kunst West-Vlaanderen.

Trying to explain the storm in words can only be an attempt to do justice to word and image. This we can say, though: a storm brings itself into existence, announces itself and goes wherever it chooses. Exactly the way paint searches its own way on the canvas. For an instance, at its height, the storm encompasses all, it stills in mass, on the canvas it hardens in time. In the storm the wind whirls, on the canvas it is controlled by the strokes of the brush, or is the brush controlled by the wind inside of it? The stillness after the storm leaves the spectator with a washed-out emptiness. Then life gets going again under a grey sky. Whatever was there before does not matter anymore - it is gone.

Stefaan Goethals from gallery Hartistic previously had paintings, sculptures, photography and ceramics. From 14 january till 18 february canvases are back, the storm distilled in oil, not bound by frames. Now go look. Because however you look at it, the picture has the final word.

My, look at the time since my previous post. The little big blog about everything has turned into a very small blog about nothing over the last six months.

Well, that's what happens when life if stuffed full of little big things of everything. To say something my days have been packed with redoing the livingroom, planting seeds of trees and shrubs, going to the daily job over and over, but that stuff is probably the least of the blog-reading world's concern.

What might interest you (if you really are out there) is a short movie I've been making with the Head On a Plate (not the bayside song that pops up all over google) moviemakers crew. An alternative to the Giant E

Boy, where has Christmas gone? As a matter of fact, where have the last two weeks gone? Looks like it has been awhile since posting here. Anyways, time to move on, it's the crappy week between party-weekend Christmas and party-weekend New Year, so what can you do?

Party, that's one thing. Watch Peter Greenaway-movies in the darkest week of the year is another. Browse around is always fun. So here's the link of the week for everyone who's looking for an alternative to the Giant E. That's E as in Ebay. Yeah, I know, this is the time to find those cheap wrong christmas gift on Ebay. But that's the stuff nobody wants, really, even if it's down from $99 to $0.99.

Looking for something really special, as in unique and handmade? www.etsy.com is your place to be. Ebay-stylee but only handmade, and therefor ultra-unique things to buy. No spiderman-dolls, no DVD-boxes unlimited, no iPod, no Motorola, no Samsung Shmamsung here. And still all the categories are filled with cool stuff: toys, clothing, holidays, you name it, someone made it!

So that's www.etsy.com, and I wouldn't be me if I wouldn't include my own link with paintings and drawings right here.

And suddenly..

..it's winter! Yes, the climate has suddenly grabbed me by the balls, so to say.

Here's a delicious recipe for chaos and cursing. For a few weeks, combine a daily dosis of heavy rains and fair to moderate blowing winds. This leaves you with a soaked lawn (added with dabs of fallen leaves), and some pools of mud yearning for some kids to slide across. If there is a sun out there, make sure it's adequatly covered by the clouds.

Repeat this for fourteen days and you will notice even the sharpest and focused people out there going numb. Then add a crushing element of surprise. Introduce winter by skipping the rains for one day. Keep those clouds in there till after dark so nobody really opens their eyes to see what's going on. At nightfall, get rid of those clouds and make sure the wind's coming from as north as possible.

This is what you get the morning after: everybody expecting to go to their job in the same dreary rain and gusts of wind. But no! The car's frozen stiff! There's an inch thick of ice on all -yes all- windows! You can't even get into your car to get that anti-freeze you bought four weeks ago!

And if that alone isn't a huge reason to be late for work, the roads are iced and you drive off, at 4 mph, trying to see something out of your frozen window. And they still keep proclaiming climate change is a slow thing.

It's been a long, but especially cold day out here, and after seeing to the plants, the cats, the chickens and the coffee (see previous post) I decided pretty much to stay in all day. And surf the net.

Boy, there's really a lot of bunk out there.

Newsfeeds, online auctions, free to download ebooks, not so free to download ebooks, audio, video, chit, chat-rooms, the works, really.

So, if I spent all afternoon surfing round and about a lot of bunk, how could I possibly be blogging about it at night? Good question. I picked up a lot of useful information, allright. Laughed a few times, surfed along on keywords and links thither and fro and behaved like the average browsing lad to surf and keep surfing and not read any paragraph longer than four lines or so.

Now for the really amazing part. Just before my girlfriend came home I took a break and a shower and that's when the real ideas started popping up. Not (add italics here) while actually surfing around (lose italics here), but with my mind off the internet, was when I came back to thinking for myself. Funny old thing, innit?

Imagine (and I'm sure you can, while you're reading this if front of your 'puter) you go online having loads of ideas, loads of stuff you want to look up, things you really want to know or have other opinions about. You start gathering that information. And you stop thinking. You absorb. You go comatose with webpages. You breathe bits and bytes, banners and ads. And it feels okay. Numb but okay. Read a papragraph that's too long? Just read diagonally and spot some keywords. Good. Good enough.

Hang on!? Get up after that seventeenth blog. Get a hold of yourself trying to find a better deal than that $0.99 on eBay. Stretch your feet. Pull your eyes off the screen trying to keep up with nine tabs open. Get outside - there's fresh air to be found out there. If you're not out in the city it even might be smelling good.

Then write about it in your blog. It's like sharing a funky site you found with your friends. Night night!
